Finding a stray man and kissing him at midnight wasn’t an option for me this year and hasn’t been for about twenty-two years. Casual sex and dating is a thing of the past for me, but the New Year’s Eve kiss is still significant.
Last night, my husband and I celebrated with the kids, but we took the time for a quick kiss at midnight. It still meant something to me. I saw it as symbol of strength for future between us.
What does the kiss at midnight on New Year’s Eve mean anyway? There’s a long history of this tradition which sees the kiss as romantic, good luck… or bad luck if you don’t kiss someone and people do it because it’s just so much fun.
An article titled, What’s Behind the New Year’s Eve Kiss? explains, “The folklore behind this tradition says that the first person you encounter in a new year – and the type of encounter you have – sets the tone for the rest of the year.”
What about those having casual sex? Does this mean that if a woman kisses her one-night wonder –who might not be a great catch– at midnight, her new year will be full of disappointment?
Yourtango.com says, “For single people, there’s a superstition that not kissing anyone portends a year of loneliness … (and) kissing some sleazy random… is worse than kissing no one at all.”
However, New Year’s Eve is the best time to meet someone new. According to themodernman.com, “people wanting to kiss a random stranger on New Year’s Eve has become quite a tradition.” It’s an exciting experience and there’s a possibility of a hook up or even a start of a new relationship.
The kiss can mean quite a few things and each person has their own reason to search for it when the mirrored-ball drops. So, pucker up, baby!
